Landing in Kona airport in the Big Island was an interesting experience for someone visiting Hawaii for the first time. All I could see out of the window is blackness of an endless lava field as the plane was touching down.
The view did not change for me while driving up north from Kona to my hotel on Hwy 19.
One interesting sight along the road is the many writings and drawings made up of carefully placed white stones on the black lava walls.
I couldn't resist the urge to leave my mark as well.
